Artist Statements

   Portrait:

My piece depicts a black and white close up portrait of a young woman with glossy eyes and no emotion in her face. The most prominent element in my piece is value, and the most prominent principle is contrast.

To create this piece  I first had to choose a portrait, create a 4X4 grid, and then I started to map out the image, and then added value and contrast to the image.

My inspiration for this piece was a magazine portrait of a young woman, who had a serious look on her face. The emotion I tried to convey was a serious emotion such as the one seen on the face.

My goal as an artist was to expand my knowledge and my step out of comfort from doodling when bored, to creating a realistic image from new techniques. I reached my goal because, I learned how to emphasis the eyes, add shading, and adding contrast.

By creating this piece I learned that if I practice and learn new techniques and start off mapping out the image then I can accomplish a new piece of art that I have never created. Overall, I like this piece because, it pushed me out of my comfort zone. I will use what I learned on this piece for future works because I may choose more images with contrast, highlights, hair, and value

Title: Travel

My piece of art depicts a world globe. It has a black metal base and a circular map of the continents. This piece was in landscape view, the title of my piece is Travel to represent my dream of traveling across the world to see new attractions and sights in different places. The most prominent element in piece is line and the most prominent principle that is seen is contrast.

This piece was created by using a black inked pen. I used a stippling effect to add value and contrast into my piece. When I first started my piece, I used a pencil to map out my piece, then transitioned to the light table to transfer it to my final paper, finally I used my pen to show the shape of my piece and make it look 3D. I used my texture to help create value, focus on highlights, and contrast.

My dream of traveling is what inspired me to create this piece. Ever since I was younger, I have always had a passion for traveling to different countries to learn their heritage and traditions. My work was created to remind me that no matter what I can always set out to travel and fulfill my dreams.

My goal for this piece to use line quality, contour, and cross contour lines to make my piece look 3D. I think as my first time using a new media, I did a fair job. I am also proud of myself for pushing myself out of my comfort zone to create new media.

During this piece I learned about contour, cross contour, and line quality. I also learned that with pen once you make a mistake learn how to work around it. The final piece turned out exactly how I wanted it to look. Next time I would like to use a new type of texture instead of stippling the whole piece.

Rocky Shore:

My piece is a lighthouse on a rocky bank, deep water, night sky, and a full moon shining in the back. The light house is a striped red and black, sitting on top of smooth rocks among the bank.  The most noticeable element in my artwork is shape  from the different shapes of the rock and lighthouse. The most noticeable principle in my art work is focal point, my lighthouse is the focus of my piece and it stands out among ever other detail in the art.

For my piece the media was watercolor, I started this project by finding an idea of somewhere I have always wanted to travel to, then I began to sketch the artwork, then finally used a light table to trace lightly onto my watercolor paper. I then began to think about what colors i wanted to do my sky rather if I wanted it to be morning, night, sunrise, or a sunset.

My piece is inspired by my love for lighthouses and traveling, ever since I can remember I have always wanted to travel away from home and see attractions such as, the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. In this piece I wanted to depict a sense of night time, that is calm.

My goal as the artist was to depict my watercolor as a realistic piece. I wanted to my piece to be seen as three-dimensional from the definition and shadows of my rocks, the new techniques I learned from this project help me achieve parts of my goals and depict my piece.

In this piece I learned how the right amount of water can help with the darkness and lightness of how I wanted in certain areas of my piece. I learned to hold my brush at the angle of which I am painting to create tight lines, and how to blend colors from wet on wet techniques and how to create details on wet on dry. I think from learning these techniques I can show growth in different projects when deciding to use this media easy.

Title: Travel Around the World

The piece I created is based on my love of traveling. This piece is a globe with a plane flying across, with an anchor going through it and flowers around the outside. I used lots of different colors within my piece from bright colors and darker colors. The number one element in my piece is color, I used different layers and variety of colors. The principle that is commonly seen throughout my piece is contrast from light to dark from the pink and orange color on my globe to the gray on the plane.

This piece of art was created by using portfolio oil pastels, for this piece I have used techniques known has sgraffito, heavy and light pressure blending, and a two color heavy pressure blend. I used sgraffito to help create fine detail of line that will be needed to make the anchor top to look like wood and the globe to show the lining, and the details in the leaves.

My inspiration for this piece is the love of traveling and thought of traveling different ways and different places in the world rather by plane or by boat. My work is to made to show the love of traveling and visiting different places to see the attractions of somewhere new that I've never been too.

My goal for this piece as the artist is to show realism through detail and contrast in color. I learned that pastel are a difficult media to create due to the large ending of the pastels trying to make sure you can fit the color into small spaces. I think I accomplished this piece by using new techniques from blending and creating details within the piece.

Overall I would say this piece turned out as I imagined and planned too. This piece was an influence on all of my future pieces in rather I want to use this media or not in future pieces, but it can also help me practice new skills in the future, like learning how to spread color into smaller spaces and how to use a blending stump. I will probably not use oil pastels in other pieces due to of the mess it creates and how you have to use more than one to create different varieties.

Title: Your Desired Path

This piece shows the choice of heaven or hell after you die, its a four point foreshortening piece. I used a variety or red, black, and grey on the side of hell and light colors of green, blue, light grey, and brown to represent heaven. The element that is strongly focused in my piece is color from how the colors are different on both sides. The principle that is focused in my piece is contrast from the light to dark on both sides of my piece.

This piece was created using color pencils, I used the process of layering colors to show depth and also detail within certain parts of my piece.I used a layer of light colors and layered over with dark then back of with the light color to blend the colors together and make it look shiny.

The inspiration for my piece was my thought process that passes through my mind every so often rather if the things I decide to do in life is going to lead me to hell or heaven, and how I can fix my ways to be sure of a happy ending for my life rather than a dreadful ending. My work is meant to depict the different places of after death rather from your sins you go to hell or you repent for your sins then heaven.

My goal as an artist is to make the piece look realistic and add details and different colors along with contrast. I wanted to challenge myself to use new media to create my piece and show the contrast between the two places. I feel as if I have slightly accomplished my goal but, I wish I would've chosen a different media within my piece. I feel as if I have challenged myself by using a new media and also creating a piece that I imagined in my mind instead of one I feel inspired by on the internet.

Overall the sketch of this piece has came out as I have imagined and hopefully when I add more color it will be exactly how I imagined, but as for now I need to finish and continue my piece but adding more color and contrast into certain areas. I hope that practicing with the color pencils in this piece help improve my skills later on in different projects.

Title: Inner View

This piece illustrates a deep meaning to what is wrong in society. This piece is shown with human like mannequins while with a thought bubble from one showing everything that is known to be a common problem within society, while the rest show the main focuses on the humans in the world.

This art piece was illustrated using acrylic paint. I used a different techniques that were taught to me during watercolor such as how to render tight lines and make colors show up brighter than other places, and how to blend colors to make a color I desire. I used different variety of colors to portray details.

My piece was inspired by everyday issues that people face within society. The night before I had a conversation with my dad about things that are going wrong in society, such as women having children and not being able to afford it, people being addicted to drugs and alcohol, everyone being addicted to an electronic screen of some sort, violence with schools, and also people never being happy with their self and trying to receive plastic surgery to make them happy.

My expectations as the artist was to create a piece using symbolism to convey the different types of shapes of people and what everyone can be addicted to in society and what everyone can see what is wrong within society. I feel as if I have accomplished my goal by portraying each thing with out having to use words to describe the issues seen in the world today.

Overall in the end, I enjoyed working on a piece that was deeper than traveling, I also enjoyed learning new techniques with acrylic paint and how to paint with it on a canvas. In the end I would possibly use acrylic all the time on most of my pieces.

Title: Sea Son

My art piece titled Sea Son is inspired from Polynesian Tiki sculptures, this sculpture is made from the media of clay. My piece is made to look as wood texture, it has squid like dreads, I added water drops to signify the ocean and also added rocks to add the ocean floor texture.

My piece was made from the media of clay, we started off with a slip of clay which is the wettest stage, this helps to make the piece shape into the designs you need for the piece. We used tools such as sponges to add water to help make the clay from cracking when it became dry to add moisture. We also used a tool that was like a plastic knife to slip and score the design and the sculpture so it could be added without falling.  I used the element of texture to add a feeling of what looks like wood. The principle that is identified in my piece is movement that makes it look as the water drops are falling down the piece and the hair is flowing down the back.

My piece is inspired from the Polynesians and their art pieces and the environment that they live in.  My piece does not have any significance for me on my feelings. In my piece there is no sense of emotions portrayed.

As an artist my goals were to experience with a new media and learn about new cultures and how they were able to create their art. This piece helped me experience by letting me learn techniques of clay and also what the Polynesians had to use to create their sculptures because of not having the tools we have today.

Within this process I learned about the Polynesian culture and how art was made within their environment compared to ours. I also learned ways of clay and how to sculpt certain things such as a coil, how to add textures to clay. This piece turned out exactly how I planned it to, with different practices and different techniques to portray the sculpture. This piece will help me with future pieces from if I decide to use clay again I had some practice to critique so I can make a positive improvement on the techniques.

  Title: Open Minded

My piece for the art show is titled Open Minded and is an acrylic media of a open head with a light bulb around a head. I used a dark red, orange, white, and yellow for my background, brown and black for the person and the open mind, yellow for the light bulb to make it seems as if it was on, and pink and dark pink for the brain and details. The subject matter is a person with a open head and a light bulb with a brain inside.  The most noticeable element in my piece is color I used different colors to add detail and a better meaning to my piece rather than black and white. The most defined principle is emphasis because the brain inside the light bulb is the main thing you seen when you look at the piece.

My artwork is made from acrylic paint. I used acrylic paint, art brushes (round and flat), a canvas, and my imagination and a few ideas from searching the web and put ideas together to create my piece. In the beginning I wanted to do an awareness piece but then decided I wanted to do something that has a deeper meaning and speaks to me.

My mom and teachers inspired my art piece by telling me all the time that when things happen to always stay open minded and not settle on one thing when thinking.  No my piece does not express a social issue but a personal issue from how sometimes I forget to keep an  open mind on others opinions and my thoughts. My piece shows no feeling other than being open minded.

My goals as the artist is to improve past media usage and improve my techniques. This piece I will definitely say helped me achieve my goal by letting me learn from my past mistakes and fixing them within this piece and by learning from my mistakes it made my piece look a lot better than my past pieces from actually having a little experience and how to correctly use the media.

In this art piece I learned that sometimes the first idea isn't always the best idea so its best to explore and create your own from putting ideas together. The final piece is exactly how I imagined my piece to turn out. This piece will help influence future pieces by teaching me how to improve my pieces and take my techniques and skills to create more advanced pieces.
